Finances and records
When people think of finances, it's usually about budgets, receipts, taxes, and the like, however I'd like to suggest that there are other things of equal, or even greater importance that you treat the same way. These would include photographs of the kids when they were younger, personal letters, postcards from relatives, newspaper clippings, diplomas, graduation materials, an other sentimental items.
You will need multiple place to store your files, but they should all be in the same room or closet. You'll need:
- Your permanent file, a small, portable, fire-proof safe, usually sold in department stores - keep the keys on your everyday keychain, and keep an extra one in a special place in the house. In this you will store:
- Birth certificates
- Passports
- Certificates - Marriage, divorce, death
- Wills
- Savings bonds, stock certificates
- Social security cards
- Deeds, mortgage agreements and other closing documents
- Life insurance policies
- And any other documents of this importance
- Some cash - if you are evacuated or in a major disaster, checks and credit cards might not be accepted (I was in the Northridge Earthquake January 17, 1994, 4:31 am, and for the first two days local business had no phone lines so they could not accept credit cards)
- A few important pictures of family - if you are in a disaster you want to make sure you have some photos
- A small, portable file cabinet that holds manilla folders, ours is about 10 inches deep so it holds lots of files but can still be picked up and carried by the handle if we need to move it. In this, store:
- Tax documentation for the previous 7-10 years
- Records of all improvements, additions, and alterations to your home - these may help on your taxes in the future
- Children's report cards, school and college records
- A box, footlocker, or trunk for storing momentos, such as:
- Photographs of trips, weddings, and other important memories
- Cards, letters, pictures made by children, etc.
- Important gifts from relatives which you no longer want displayed but have sentimental value
- Other items you want to be able to know where they are, and to remove in a hurry if needed
