Home Office

You need to establish a home office area.

Here are a few ideas to help you be more productive in your home business.

  1. Purchase supplies in quantity. You don't want to go shopping in the middle of a project to get more printer paper, for example.
  2. Dress for work. If you get out of bed and go to work in your pajamas you won't feel like you're at work, and will be more likely to go have coffee and watch TV.
  3. Try walking to work. Take a short walk around the block before you go to your "office". This will give you time to get your mind on work, give you a sense of separation from the rest of the household, and give you some exercise to boot.
  4. Keep your office organized. Keep clutter out, close the closet door, close the office door (if you have one), limit your personal belongings to those you'd have if your office were in a larger company, keep the pets out of the office area, etc.
  5. Don't allow more interuptions than you would if you were working out of the home. Don't let the members of your household just walk in and ask you "what's for dinner?", let them know that you're at work, and if they need to see you in an emergency you're available, but if it's not an emergency, they need to leave a message and you'll get back to them - provide a message board just outside the office area where they can do this. In other words, handle interuptions like you would if you were out of the home - let friends know that you're "at work" and you'll call them back when you can socialize, etc.
