Keeping Records
You should have a permanent file in your house, in a fire/flood-proof container, but you can't put everything in this container. You should have some things in a safe deposit box.
Some files can be stored permanently on a shelf in the attic, basement, utility room or garage. For example, after you finish your taxes for the year, put all the paperwork into a large envelope and store the envelope in a box labeled "Taxes". Only keep 10 years of taxes.
