Other Files

In addition to your permanent file and safe deposit box you should have files for:

  • Each savings account, mutual fund, and other investments - mark on your calendar to review their performance every 3 to six months.
  • Bank statements, and canceled checks (if you still receive them) - this will help if you have to prove you made a payment.
  • Important receipts, guarantees, warrantees, etc. for appliances and equipment. You'll want to be able to find these if you have to repair or replace equipment or appliances.
  • A budget file for each month.
  • Owners manuals. You can 3-hole punch them and put them in a binder.
  • Medical records. Everything you need to process insurance claims - forms, instructions, eligible bills, birth dates, social security numbers, copies of the policies, vaccination records, etc.
  • Home inventory. For insurance purposes, have a list and photographs, or even a video, of your possessions.
