Britain Upholds 1955 Hanging Conviction
LONDON - Britain's High Court upheld the murder conviction of the last woman hanged in the country, rejecting on Monday an appeal by the family of Ruth Ellis nearly half a century after the nightclub hostess was sent to the gallows. Ellis was convicted of shooting to death her lover, race car driver David Blakely. She was hanged in 1955. Her family sought to have the conviction changed to the lesser verdict of manslaughter, but three senior judges in the High Court rejected the appeal. Outside the court, Ellis' 81-year-old sister Muriel Jakubait said she was shocked by the verdict. "The whole thing seems very unfair and I am never going to give up over this until I am taken from this earth," she said.My Sardonic Thoughts
- What do you expect to happen, have her un-hanged?
- It was 48 years ago!
