A letter to God
Dear God, Why didn't you save the little girl in Michigan, or those kids in Columbine? Sincerely, A Concerned StudentDear Concerned Student, I am not allowed in schools. Sincerely, God.
Subject: The world today In light of the recent shootings in Massachusetts, Denver and California, Madeline Murray O'Hare (murdered, her body was found recently) complained she didn't want any prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Someone said you should not read the Bible in school (Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Love thy neighbor as thyself), and we said OK. Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because it might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide), and we said OK, we won't spank them anymore. Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued. (There's a big difference between disciplining and touching, beating, smacking, humiliating, kicking, etc.) And we accepted their reasoning. Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. And we said, that's a grand idea. Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want, so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school. And we said, that's another great idea. Then some of our top elected officials said it doesn't matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. And agreeing with them, we said it doesn't matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good. And hey, what does 'is' mean anyway? And then someone said let's print magazines with pictures of nude women and call it wholesome, down-to-earth appreciation for the beauty of the female body. And we said we have no problem with that. And someone else took that appreciation a step further and published pictures of nude children and then stepped further still by making them available on the Internet. And we said they're entitled to their free speech. And the entertainment industry said; let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. And let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said it's just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, and nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead. Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out.
- Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell.
- Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.
- Funny how everyone wants to go to heaven provided they do not have to believe, think, say, or do anything the Bible says.
- Funny how someone can say, "I believe in God" but still follow Satan who, by the way, also "believes" in God.
- Funny how we are quick to judge but not to be judged.
- Funny how you can send a thousand 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.
- Funny how the lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but the public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.
- Funny how someone can be so fired up for Christ on Sunday, but be an invisible Christian the rest of the week.
- Funny how when you go to forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it to them.
- Funny how I can be more worried about what other people think of me than what God thinks of me.
- Pass it on if you think it has merit! If not then just discard it.... no one will know that you did, for sure. But, if you discard this thought process, then don't sit back and complain about what a bad shape the world is in.....

The comments stated below are not necessarily the opinions of Andy Hughes or DarkroomSource or Hughes Computer Consulting. It bothered me so bad that people have removed God from public schools, that I have placed my children in a school that is based completely on God. The children stand when adults enter the classrooms and are tought to live by God\'s rules, not man\'s. This wasn\'t by choice - it was obligation!!!Contributed by on 2005-06-27 12:29:15
you know what you are so right about people being scared. i mean i read this and expected to see a lot of comments and when i got to the end of the page and saw that there was only 1 posted i was shocked i mean that stupid job application got more comments and that one was stupid. come on people don\'t be afraid to post your comment. no one is going to judge youContributed by on 2005-11-28 13:00:56
The Bible (a book that \'fundamentalists\' don\'t know the fundamentals of) argues against public prayer. The Bible argues for a separation of church and state. The Bible says that even if something is ok for a Cristian, if it goes against the beliefs of anyone present, then the Christian shouldn\'t do it.Contributed by on 2008-04-19 23:24:18
Wouldn\'t it be better if the author knew the fundamentals of Jesus and Paul\'s teaching?
I can find little of value in this \'Letter.\' To begin with voluntary prayer is still allowed in public schools, compulsory prayer is not. How does this lead to the kind of depravity we\'re all trying to end? Sexuality shouldn\'t be treated as an aberration. Not many here will want to admit it, but we are animals with sexual impulses. When teens hit puberty those drives programmed into our brains through millions of years of evolution switch on and start expressing themselves. In a free society responsible sex should be taught and encouraged. In fact, it is the repression of these urges which will manifest themselves into violence.Contributed by on 2008-04-20 04:10:11
And even though abortions are gruesome, they are sometimes necessary. For many poor, single mothers it is their best way to avoid abject poverty.
I know there\'s more inanity to point out, but the one statement which knocked me out of my chair was the question why do people trust their newspapers above the Bible. Now, the state of journalism today can be called into question but at least we can point to an author -- who is still living -- without too much difficulty. The Bible on the other hand has been translated, re-translated, distorted, mistranslated, arbitrarily selected and politically manipulated so many times it\'s a wonder anyone can claim its authority on anything at all and not be laughed out of the conversation. Simply read \'Misquoting Jesus\' by Bart Erhman for a flavor of what I\'m talking about.
You do not need God and religion to instil a sense of morality in people. I am a decent person, I do not believe in God (the best \'label\' for my beliefs I have found to date is secular humanism, but I won\'t go into the details here, google it if you\'re interested). Why are we heaping blame on schools and politicians when it is the family that has the most profound impact on any young person?Contributed by on 2008-04-20 05:26:26
Yes, morality is in decline. Yes, something should be done. Yes, we have gone too far in restricting schools ability to punish bad behaviour.
We do not need religion back in schools though, it is perfectly possible to have a decent set of core values without forcing religion on a generation increasingly sceptical about religion as a whole. Apart from anything else, it would be pointless. The threat of \'eternal damnation\' is no threat if you don\'t believe there\'s a God to punish you. The promise of heavenly rewards the same.
Societal, family and peer condemnation is far more effective and real. Parents need to take more responsibility for the raising of their children. Parents have less and less time available for the raising of children now. The days of stay-at-home moms are coming to an end for the majority of the population, so it is imperative that the remaining time they do have is spent with their children, talking to them, helping with school work, communicating and teaching them the set of values that they wish them to grow up with. If that includes religion, fine, teach them that at home and church - not in schools.
You cannot ignore your children. Pay scant regard to their emotional and educational development beyond reading a grade card, then blame the schools when they don\'t turn out as you hoped.
More bible thumping nonsense. The USA has more crime and murder than any other country in the world. There\'s NO god in school in China. Hell they\'re an Athiest state! The USA is considered by most people in the world to be one of the most religiously conservative nations on the planet. None of these arguments hold water.Contributed by on 2008-04-20 06:52:44
The fact that anyone could use the tragic events at Columbine as an argument that we need god in schools is sickening. What was needed there was an FBI agent dad spending more time with his kid and not letting him have guns. Families looking out for their children and making sure they knew how to deal with bullies - some sort of school administration understanding of the cruelty kids can heap upon one another.
Do you really think that if they had to pray every morning, they would have just magically - wait. Of course you do. Your entire religion is magical bullsh*t.
Buddhists are more peaceful than christians.
Wicca are more peaceful than christians.
Pagan tribal aborigines are more peaceful than christians.
Hell, even voodoo and santaria practitioners have lower per-capita crime rates than christians.
Explain THAT.
^^^ LOL what an undereducated, misinformed, propaganda filled hate mongering idiot. I\'ll pray for you idiot.Anonymously contributed on 2008-04-20 08:25:45
I don\'t live in the USA, so i don\'t know the reality in there personally, but this i can say: i KNOW people!! And i see people are lost, have no route to follow, they just wander around aimlessly because politicians, family, AND schools have abandoned them. Hell, even us, the neighbours, the friends, the workmates, we live lonely on our daily routine!! So yeah, it\'s our fault too.Contributed by on 2008-04-20 08:52:01
Now one thing you cannot deny. Each and every set of moral rule even the atheist, humanist has come from one basis - RELIGION. Don\'t believe in it? Study History and stop believing in those Masonry crap!!
Wait, was that last comment directed to me? About my comment on Masonry? If it was let me ask you, where is the free speech? Second, i DO know Masonry because i sutdied it too, and is active in my country, and personally is for me a reason for shame. I am still entitled to my opinion. I might remove the word \'crap\' from my comment, but still this are the teachings that Masonry spreads about - atheist, anti-religion, under the guise of \'freedom\'. And that IS a fact. I am not offending anyone with this, but i am oppenly criticising, yes. Nonetheless this is off-topic, lets return to the subject in question.Contributed by on 2008-04-20 09:03:13
If people want to believe that these are the reasons the world is going downhill, that\'s fine. Personally, I believe we can\'t force people to believe, they should make their own choice.Anonymously contributed on 2008-04-20 09:15:17
Secondly, there\'s been comments here saying that if you\'re going to be quoting statistics, then make sure you research them. I\'m not quoting any statistics here, but there\'s one quote in the original letter that I believe is wrong.
\'And someone else took that appreciation a step further and published pictures of nude children and then stepped further still by making them available on the Internet. And we said they\'re entitled to their free speech.\'
I believe that Child Pornography is illegal in most countries, and there are many operations happening all the time to catch people who do it. Yes, there are still people who do it, and people who make it. But we have said it is wrong.
Then a group of people stood up and said \'we know what\'s best for your children\' and they started fighting to be able to tell everyone what is best for everyones\' children as well as their own. This group also happens to think that if you we do not believe in their particular version of the world, then we will be sent to a place of eternal suffering, and this group also wants to be able to impose THAT belief upon everyones children, whether they want it or not - because, apparently, this will make the children better people.Contributed by on 2008-04-20 09:39:10
I have a problem with that. It\'s NOT Ok.
School is for \'academic\' education. Sunday school is for \'religious\' education. Keep your fantasy world of fear and guilt out of my kids minds.
While I am a believer in HaShem and his son, I am also a believer in the U.S. Constitution. Now I believe in the Freedom of Religion and I think that G-d should be in the classrooms, but something all believers need to be ready to swallow and accept is that if you let the G-d of Christians/Jews in you have to let the Gods of other faiths in. In the U.S. you don\'t get a choice in what God is allowed in school it\'s IS either an all or nothing decision and if you don\'t like it blame it on the same Constitution that gives you the right to speak about these things on this site. I went to school just before G-d was taken out of schools and I witnessed the oppression and dominance of Christians over other religions including myself. Christian children would openly assault people of other beliefs and tear up the religious things that hung on non-Christian\'s lockers, but it was utter blasphemy to tear down the 10 commandments or anything concerning Christmas and the school faculty helped the Christian children oppress the rest of us. \'That would never be done by good Christian children\' you say? The Halocaust, The Salem Witch Trials, The Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades, be honest with your past, it doesn\'t look too pretty for \'non-oppression\'. If Christians are willing to heed the Constitution, I\'m more than willing to have G-d in school but if it is going to be the attitude of \'Our G-d only!\' It would be better left out.Contributed by on 2008-04-20 09:51:04
the whole \'funny how...\' list doesn\'t work with the bible. At least not with the new testament. I thought god was supposed to love you unconditionally?Contributed by on 2008-04-20 09:57:35
Also, if god is all knowing/all seeing, he already knows what your decisions will be. If god makes you and you deny god, he already knew you would. Therefore god made you to go to hell, free will does not exist.
Does any of you remember what does ecumenism stand for? It was started by a christian. And it is still pursued today by the Catholic Church. Persecutions? Harassments? Holy Wars? Yes, they have been done in the name of God... but they were done BY MEN, not God, nor Religion. And all the time it happened it was for political reasons, not religious ones. When i speak of God, i speak not only of my God (christian), but the Jehovah (the same), Allah, etc.Contributed by on 2008-04-20 14:58:30
I believe in ecumenism, in fact i believe all religions serve the same God, but we, in our narrow vision, couldn\'t see it that way, and named Him differently according to our culture.
Speaking about free-will, yes God does grant that, if He didn\'t, do you think he would send His Son to be sacrificed at the hands of sinners, and not use His Power to stop it?
Free-will is what we use every day, even as we turn away from Him. But when we get out of the way that\'s when we start complaining about how shitty life is, because we believe life is supposed to be a fairy-tale.
Life has the best and the worst, they are all part of the way!! We need to start understanding that sometimes it is the harsh moments that do teach us something, and makes us grow better. Jesus said: \'Those who wish to follow, take up your cross and follow Me\'.
I believe that is free-will. Now you tell me, if there is any free-will when your government and your school denies you the right to wear religious symbols in order not to offend others??? Is that what you call free-will?? I can hardly say that...
You have no need to apologize at all, i like to discuss with people with different points of view. Only that way we can test our own opinions ant seek the truth about them. Do you know who Pope John XXIII chose for his counselor after he was elected? His worst adversary. \\\'Why?\\\' his future counselor asked. The good Pope answered: \\\'I need someone that thinks differently from me, so that i may know if i am truly right or wrong. I couldn\\\'t do that if everyone around me thinks the same.\\\'Contributed by on 2008-04-20 18:12:12
Best regards to you too, and may His Light shine upon your life has it flowed through your words.
